5 Tips for Getting Active

Here are five things to remember when starting a fitness routine:

Start Slow and Build Up
Talk to your doctor before you start an exercise program. If you have an injury or medical condition, be sure to talk about a program that helps improve that and makes you stronger. Make sure you warm up and cool down. Give your muscles time to get ready. As you get stronger and your stamina improves, gradually increase either the time or intensity of your exercise.

Break It Up
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend adults get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle strengthening activity each week. That doesn’t mean you have to do it all at once. Break it up. Do a little at a time. It all adds up.

Get Creative
Try different types of workouts, such as walking, hiking, or bicycling. Try a new class. Try something you’ve always wanted to but didn’t, for whatever reason. Add some fun into your fitness routine, so you look forward to it.

Listen to Your Body and Be Flexible
It’s always important to listen to your body. If you feel pain, STOP! If you experience a shortness of breath, dizziness, or nausea, take a break. If you don’t feel up to working out one day, take a rest day or two.

Build in Recovery Time
Be sure to schedule in rest days. Over-exercising can cause unnecessary soreness or even injury. Allow your body time to rest and recover.
