How often are codebooks updated? When are the new, revised, and deleted codes implemented each year?
Each year on October 1, the upcoming year’s ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS code books are implemented for the following 12 months. All other code books, such as CPT and HCPCS level II, are implemented in the healthcare industry on January 1.
Here is the breakdown. These are effective with dates of service October 1, 2021.
There are now 72,739 total ICD-10-CM codes for FY 2022:
Most of these changes have occurred in the injuries, poisonings, consequences of external causes, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, factors influencing health status and contact with health services and chapters. There are expansions of G92 codes, the addition of F32.A for depression, NOS, and the addition of U09.9 for sequela of COVID-19. “Many excludes 1 code changed to excludes 2 codes,” and also “expansion of existing codes to be specific codes” some index entries had codes changed to correct errors and more appropriately code the condition.
